Both Camelot and pure independents attempt to realize costs savings by using digital film tech due to the lower cost of processing, stock, dailies and certain editing costs. Major studios also benefit from using digital technology in certain genres, but not so much from a cost standpoint. Instead, the heavy effects used by major studios’ high-budget action and science-fiction pictures are increasingly enhanced as a result of using digital photography. While this negates the cost benefits, the overall value in terms of entertainment quality is generally enhanced. One party that has found the benefits of digital photography rather elusive is the small and mid sized production company. This is generally because when they convince a director to use digital photography, the director and director of photography (DP) will specify additional camera setups. Similarly, the increased, low-cost coverage available, along with real-time video monitoring, often results in issues between directors and DPs, as they analyze and debate each shot during precious shooting time. As a result, the historical mixed use of digital photography by small and medium sized production companies generally has a neutral impact on overall value.
